Quotes from “Running the Edge” by Adam Goucher and Tim Catalano (Available Summer, 2011)

There is nothing wrong with normal people who live average lives. In fact, it is a far easier road than the one we propose, but when a runner laces up her shoes and heads out the front door, she has already separated herself from a normal life. The moment she begins to swing her arms and place one stride in front of another, she has entered an exceptional world filled with exceptional people.

We find our answers on the roads, trails, and in races as we are given mental space to reflect, learn, and grow. In pursuing our passion with a purposeful mind, we uncover secrets others spend a lifetime searching for.

Running is more than a sport. It is an identity. I am not somebody who likes to run. I am a runner. This is the difference between a pastime and a passion. I like to play golf but I am not a golfer. I like to cook but I am not a chef. I don’t like to run. I am a runner. It is part of who I am and is woven into the fabric of my personality, character, and psyche.
-Adam Goucher

If runners are already abnormal, Distance Mavens are even more so. Distance Mavens possess the awareness and ability to spill that hour of exceptional living during a run into the remaining hours of their day. Excellence in everything means to live an extraordinary existence not only in the running sphere but in the entire amphitheater of life. There is no aspect of life in which they wish to be ordinary or to settle for average.

The path of the Distance Maven is difficult. The task of achieving excellence in everything is enormous. The likelihood of success depends not only on our own attributes such as responsibility and determination, but also on who walks that path with us. If we can find kindred spirits, and draw strength from a larger community, the probability of our success will increase. Fellow Distance Mavens will enhance our journey, help us fight battles, and accomplish goals we would not be able to achieve if we run the edge alone.
